Seafarer Essentials: Your Basic Packing Checklist

Getting ready for a 6–7 month contract at sea? Packing the right things can make life on board much easier. Here’s a simple and practical checklist to help you bring everything you need. A minimum of 40 kg is usually allotted for your baggage, typically divided into 20 kg per luggage, so pack wisely!

Clothes
Bring enough clothes for work and daily life. Include clothes for different weather.

  • Working clothes (can get dirty)

  • Long johns or warm clothes (for cold weathers)
  • Jacket and overalls (offices should provide these)

  • Pants / Jeans

  • Clothes for shore leave

Health and Hygiene
Pack your personal care items. Wrap liquids well to avoid spilling.

  • Medicine (personal and first aid)
    • Headache or pain: Paracetamol / Biogesic, Ibuprofen / Nurofen
    • Allergies: Diphenhydramine / Benadryl, Loratadine / Clarityn, Cetirizine / Zyrtec
    • Indigestion / Heartburn: Tums / Gaviscon
    • Indigestion / Diarrhea: Pepto-Bismol
    • Constipation: Dulcolax / Coloxyl
    • Cough: Ascoril D
    • Phlegm / Expectorant: Mucosolvan
