Life onboard can be tiring and challenging, but there are ways to make your time enjoyable and fulfilling. Here are six activities you can do alone or with your fellow seafarers to help you relax, ease feelings of homesickness, and stay entertained while at sea.
- Socializing
Socializing is a perfect way to get to know your fellow seafarers and build friendships. Interacting with them over meals, drinks, or casual conversations on crew mess can bring you closer together and reduce the feeling of loneliness. You can also join the Sabado Nights of the seafarers where they eat and drink together to relax and temporarily forget about work. - Working Out & Sports
Most of the ships have a gym so you can work out during your free time. You can also play sports such as basketball, table tennis, or darts. These activities keep you busy and allow you to stay fit. - Zumba
You can also try zumba with your crewmates if you don’t like working out or playing sports. Some ships have zumba sessions every Saturday and Sunday. It’s a fun activity that helps you relieve stress. - Playing Games
Playing video games or board games is one of the activities you can do alone or with your colleagues. This form of entertainment allows you to unwind and bond with your fellow crew members. - Reading and Listening to Music
Some ships are stocked with books and magazines that you can read. You can also try journaling or focus on your workbooks. Listening to good music also helps you relax and keep yourself occupied. - Rest and Relax
After long and demanding work hours, you also need to rest and relax. You can either sleep in the cabin or just enjoy the view of the ocean. You can also watch the sunrise, sunset, or stargaze at night.
