For Marine Students
Step 1
Study BSMT or BSMarE
BSMT (Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation) and BSMarE (Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering are courses that usually take 3 years in school, plus 1 year of onboard training. You will only obtain your diploma after completing both.

Step 2
Complete Onboard Training (Cadetship)
Onboard training is typically 12 months as a cadet; if you're not a cadet, you may need 36 months of onboard experience (check with your school or company). As part of your training, you will need to update the following (and both should be provided by your school):
- Daily Watch Journal — record your duties and tasks during watch
- Training Record Book (TRB) — record activities, projects, and skills learned onboard.
Step 3
After Onboard Training
Report to your Shipboard Training Officer (STO). Now, you have to pass an interview and exam to qualify for graduation.
Step 4
Before Joining a Ship ("Before Sampa")
1. Complete the following required trainings:
- Basic Training
- Security Awareness Training & Seafarers with Designated Security Duties
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB)
- Firefighting
- And others that your company might require.
2. Get essential IDs, like your Passport and Seaman’s Book.
3. Prepare OFW insurances and memberships (SSS, PAG-IBIG, OWWA).
Step 5
Apply for a Company!
Submit your diploma, IDs, and certificates. You'll be required to pass a medical exam, usually arranged or recognized by the company. Then, all you need to do is await the company's schedule for your onboard deployment!
For Non-Mariners
Step 1
Create a MARINA MISMO Account
This gives you your Seafarer’s Registration Number (SRN) for all your seafaring transactions. Click the link below to create your MARINA MISMO account to get started:
Step 2
Get your Birth Certificate and Transcript of Records (TOR)
It can be the original or certified copy. It will be needed for your Seaman's Book application. If you don't have a copy of your Birth Certificate, you can request one online here:

Schedule and Get Your Passport

Step 4
Schedule and Get Your NBI Clearance
You can apply for your NBI Clearance online here:
Step 5
Take Your Medical PEME (Pre-Employment Medical Exam)
Obtain a valid Medical Certificate of Fitness from an accredited clinic.
Step 6
Book and Complete Your Basic Training Course
It will require the following:
- SRN-MARINA MISMO ACCOUNT
- Valid ID
- Medical PEME certificate
After training, get your Basic Training Certificate and official receipt.
Step 7
Apply for your Seaman's Book
Submit required documents including:
- Passport
- Birth Certificate
- NBI clearance
- Basic Training Certificate
- Medical Certificate
- Photo
- Application Form
- TOR
- 2 Valid IDs

Start Applying to Shipping Companies!
Prepare your CV or resume. Companies will ask for your Seaman's Book and training certificates, and await the company's schedule for your onboard deployment!
